Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. DuVernay worked as a night nurse in order to give her mother the time she required during the day to indulge in the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma inspired her to create a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her the college. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home of one of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. In 1999, she founded her own firm of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of networks for promotion and lifestyle that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
